There’s some exciting news on the horizon for Ottawa’s travellers. Budget air carrier Flair Airlines has announced that it's expanding its routes into the capital city, and services out of Ottawa are starting at just $59. From spring 2020, Flair Airlines' Ottawa flights will offer regular services to a number of Canadian destinations, including Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Halifax.

In a statement earlier this week, low-cost carrier Flair Airlines announced that its 2020 summer schedule would be expanding services into eastern and Atlantic Canada.

Starting in May this year, there will be a new daily service between Ottawa and Toronto, and multiple flights per week to Edmonton, Calgary and Halifax.

Passengers looking to make the most out of introductory offers can fly for $59 one-way between Ottawa and Toronto, and $79 each way to Halifax.

The company’s CEO Jim Scott explained, “Our expanded routes into Ottawa and the Atlantic Maritimes are exciting and displays the need Canadians have for affordable air travel.”

“Having flown nearly one million passengers in 2019 and with plans to fly 1.5 million in 2020, we are proud to be expanding our reach further across the country,” Scott added.

A spokesperson for the airline told CTV Ottawa that the new routes running through to October 2020 are now available for booking.

In their press release, the budget carrier described their mission to “change the airline industry for the better, providing affordable and accessible air travel for Canadians amidst an industry that has too long been dominated by full-service airlines with high prices.”

Mark Laroche, President and CEO of the Ottawa International Airport Authority, added, "Airlines like Flair have changed the aviation landscape worldwide by delivering lower-cost unbundled fares."

"Every passenger has the choice to pay for the options they value, such as seat assignments, checked bags, as well as in-flight food and beverage. Flair Airlines is a welcome addition to YOW’s offering."

Last week, the airline also announced a new unlimited travel pass, allowing passengers to take unlimited flights to select Canadian destinations between February and May 2020.

Globe-trotters can travel across the country for the set price of $499 plus taxes and airport fees, as well as additional fees as required.

While the company is expanding into Ottawa, it's removing its Abbotsford-Edmonton route.

According to CTV News, the move is due to “a lack of passengers and intense competition from rival budget carrier Swoop.”

Earlier this year, Swoop launched a “loonie seat sale,” offering flights with fares starting from just $12.
