To the delight of sports fans across Ottawa, the Canadian Elite Basketball League has officially confirmed that professional basketball is coming back to the city! The "Ottawa BlackJacks" were introduced to Canada today, and they are expected to begin play as early as Spring 2020. While many locals are celebrating the return of basketball to the capital, others are totally hating on the team's new name.
The name and logo of the brand-new franchise was revealed on Wednesday morning, during a media conference at TD Place in Lansdowne Park.
During the media conference, the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced a multi-year agreement with TD Place, who will formally host the brand-new Ottawa BlackJacks.
The BlackJacks will join the six-team single entity ownership league that launched back in 2019. Currently, there are six other teams in the CEBL: Edmonton, Guelph, Fraser Valley, Hamilton, Niagara and the reigning champion, Saskatchewan.
While this is definitely good news for sports fans in Ottawa, the name "Ottawa BlackJacks" hasn't quite appealed to everyone. In fact, it's already causing a bit of a debate online.
Taking to Twitter following the announcement, one basketball fan wrote, "Black Jacks? WHAT A STUPID NAME! WHY????...My GAWD...so much history, so much cool Canadiana, and you decide on BLACK JACKS! Embarrassing!"
Another Ottawa local added, "I don't know why a team in Ottawa isn't called the Colonels. It's not a great name but I mean Blackjacks?"
A third joked, "Is 'Ottawa Blackjacks' a nod to the Redblacks or a shot at Melnyk's gambling debt?"

One Twitter user responded, “I think I’m going to need this t-shirt!"
Another added, “The aesthetic symmetry of the Ottawa Redblacks and BlackJacks franchise names!"
