Philippines' President Now Wants To Take Revenge By Dumping Garbage On Canada

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is once again making threats against Canada. President Duterte threatened this Tuesday to dump trash all over Canada's "beautiful beaches" in retaliation to the ongoing garbage dispute between the Philippines and Canada. The new threat comes just one week after the president warned that he would declare a Philippines Canada war if the issue is not resolved.

Over 103 containers of garbage, which amounted to a total weight of 2,450 tons, was shipped from Canada to the Philippines between 2013 and 2014. A Filipino court ordered Canada to take back the trash in 2016. However, the Canadian government has yet to do so and continues to make attempts to convince the Philippines to dispose of the garbage themselves, which has only served to further infuriate Duterte.

"I'll give a warning to Canada maybe next week that they better pull that (trash) out. We'll declare war against them, we can handle them anyway," said President Duterte.

The threat was made by Duterte during a fiery speech at a sporting event in the Philippines on Sunday evening. “I will tell them to load it onto ships next week. If you don’t accept your garbage, I will dump it on your beautiful beaches,” the president exclaimed, according to Asia One.

Duterte informed the press last week that Canada had just one week to collect its garbage or he would personally "set sail" to the country and return it himself, reports Global News.

“I want a boat prepared. I’ll give a warning to Canada maybe next week that they better pull that thing out or I will set sail to Canada and dump their garbage there,” Duterte stated.

Duterte then took a step farther by inviting Canadians to "eat the garbage" if they wanted to once it had returned to the country. “Celebrate because your garbage is coming home, eat it if you want to," Duterte was quoted as saying.

So what is the Canadian Government doing to resolve the issue?

Well, according to Global News, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna stated that Canada was working with the Philippines government to come up with a viable solution.

“Canada is strongly committed to collaborating with the Philippines government to resolve this issue and is aware of the court decision ordering the importer to ship the material back to Canada,” press secretary Sabrina Kim explained.
