Poco, it's time to celebrate and dust off your skates! Port Coquitlam's new sports centre opened and the brand new facility is seriously massive. Home to two rinks, a library and so much more, this new centre is already fully operational and there is even more to come.
The city of Port Coquitlam is the proud new owner of a massive 205,000 square-foot sports centre. According to the city's website, the centre opened up on Aug. 28. and all week, people have been encouraged to come down and celebrate the opening.
This construction completion is just Phase 1 of 2 that is set to finish in late 2021. According to the city's website, the new centre located at 2150 Wilson Avenue includes several amenities such as a leisure pool, two ice rinks, a library, multipurpose rooms, games and lounge rooms, and a fitness centre.
During the second phase of construction, the facility will open the third ice rink, a gym, children’s area, spray park, cafe, outdoor plaza, and 500 underground parking stalls. A major development like this is a welcome addition to Port Coquitlam and this is the first massive facility and development of its kind in the city.
Completion of Phase 2 is anticipated for the fall of 2021.
To make this facility a reality, the city capitalized on several different funding sources including $41.2 million from internal and reserve funds, $12.5 million from a federal infrastructure grant, and $52 million that was borrowed over a 30-year term.
Additional funds of $7.3 million come from Community Recreation Complex levies from 2015 to 2019, and $17 million from the sale of city-owned lands.
Although a wonderful addition to the city, some are not so happy with the results. According to Global News, two arenas that opened in the centre were built without change rooms for referees and linesmen.
Under Hockey Canada’s own rules, officials must have separate dressing rooms that are equipped with a toilet and a shower.
According to Global News, the Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey Association (PCMHA) president Kim Egli said because of this, 500 children will not be able to play in the new facility. A worker with the city told Global News that the issue would be addressed during the second construction phase.
This new sports centre could be a good place to go skating, work at the library and evey bring a date with you to Poco to see all it has to offer.
