It's no secret that finding an affordable Ontario home in 2020 is no easy task. Millennials looking to buy their forever homes are facing a different landscape than their Generation X predecessors. Luckily, if you're looking for a home under half a million dollars, there are still some options around some of Ontario's major cities.

Many factors go into finding a home in a city that isn't going to cost upwards of $500,000. However, one of the biggest factors is the location.

According to Zoocasa, the cheapest city to own a home in Ontario is Thunder Bay, which has an average home price of $217,745.

The most expensive area to settle down in is in the Greater Toronto Area, which has an average home price of $804,584.

So, if you're looking for something super cheap, the best way to do so is to move out of the GTA.

However, there is a lot of wiggle room in between those two pinnacles that don't force you to pack up your life and move up north to avoid renting.

Hamilton, London, and even Ottawa all have a variety of homes that you are able to score for a cheaper price.

Lucky for you, we've compiled a list of $400,000 homes across several Ontario cities to give a glimpse into how location deeply affects your options.
