You Can Get Ice Cream From The World's First Waffle Cone Machine At This Virginia Diner

Ice cream cones might be the dessert of summertime - who doesn’t love their favorite flavor on a hot day? Getting a few scoops in a homemade, hot waffle cone makes for a great night after a long day outside. This restaurant in Virginia is the birthplace of the waffle cone and the same machine is still in use today.

Doumar's Barbeque in Norfolk, Virginia is home to the world's first invention of the original waffle cone machine. Visitors can enjoy a car-hopping experience, or they can dine in to see all the magic happen.

This eatery specializes in Carolina-style barbecue, burgers and shakes that has been delivered car-side since 1933.

Abe Doumar is the brain behind the ice cream cone machine.  He invented it in 1904 at a fair in St. Louis, Missouri. This machine is still in use at Doumar's today and kicks out four waffle cones at a time.

Doumar started opening his chain of ice cream stands along the east coast in 1905 and eventually opened a restaurant right here in Norfolk. This location is the only spot left and is still a go-to place for visitors and locals.

This popular Virginia spot has been seen on the Rachael Ray Show, as well as Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The cheap prices and good food are what draw customers in daily.

On nice summer days, the staff will actually bring the ice cream cone waffle machine outside of the establishment. This way families and friends can see the magic happen right before their own eyes.

It's important to keep in mind that the barbeque joint accepts all major credit cards, but has a $5.00 minimum for all purchases.

Whether you want a BBQ sandwich, a cheeseburger, a fried ham sandwich, a hand-spun milkshake or a fresh fruit limeade, customers will never leave hungry or disappointed.
