Stargazing is an amazing way to enjoy the cool summer nights anywhere in Texas. The McDonald Observatory makes watching the stars in the sky so incredible, you're not going to want to miss visiting it this summer. The observatory has daily tours and the most spectacular "star parties", making it the perfect spot for some summer night fun.
Visitors have the chance to check out some of the largest telescopes in the world at this observatory in the hills. You can purchase a daily viewing pass which gives you the opportunity to safely take a closer look at the sun or you can visit in the evening for a tour of the night sky. The observatory offers tours and viewings depending on what you decide you have time for. Tours with this pass are $8 and viewing only is $5.
Every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, the McDonald Observatory has what they call "star parties"! The parties consist of the most spectacular constellation tours. You get to head over to their telescope park, pick out your favorite one, and listen while you’re guided through the stars. We suggest you dress warmly even on summer nights as it does tend to get cold. Star Parties usually last around 2 hours. Tickets are $12 and we recommend buying them in advance as they have a tendency to sell out.
The observatory is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Their super cute Star Dust Café is open starting at noon. At the café, you will find everything you need to satisfy your hunger from sandwiches to quesadillas. They also have a variety of cold coffees and sweet desserts to enjoy before or after your incredible tour of the skies.
The McDonald Observatory is located at 3640 Dark Sky Drive in McDonald Observatory, Texas. You can find more information on the official observatory website here.
