If you’re in the area and seeking adventure, we found an awesome way to see it all. You can explore beautiful sea caves on a La Jolla kayak tour!
There are a couple of local places that offer an affordable way to tour the sea caves in the La Jolla neighborhood. Make sure to call ahead and check weather conditions. If the waves are too high, the tours won’t go in the caves that day.
When you start your tour, you’ll meet on the beach with your certified tour guides to go over some basic tips and safety rules to follow. Most tours last for 90 minutes. Bring light clothes, sunscreen, and prepare to get soaking wet! No gear or experience is needed for the tour.
During your kayak tour through the beautiful Pacific Ocean, you will stop and learn a little bit about the history of the sea caves and get to see cool marine life!
There are Leopard sharks, colorful fish, turtles, and seals! At one point in the tour, the guides will pass out life vests and snorkel masks, so you can jump in and see the marine life up-close if you want to.
The seven La Jolla sea caves were carved out of a 200-foot high cliff overlooking the ocean. Since the stone dates back to the Cretaceous period, this means they are 75-million years old!
Strong winds, waves, and high tides carved out the stone and caves to give it the unique appearance you see today. According to LaJolla.com, there are seven caves in La Jolla, and each one of them has a unique name.
You can also access the Sunny Jim cave by foot through the Cave Store for a cheap entrance fee (this is not a part of the tour). It’s a long walk down, but it’s worth the journey! When will you get the opportunity to walk through a cave carved out of prehistoric rocks?
We’ve done the sea cave kayak tours and had a fantastic time! Even if you’re a beginner, chances are, you’ll catch on quickly. This experience makes for a memorable day in San Diego!
