Selena Gomez Opens Up About Her Emotional Kidney Transplant For The First Time
It was only in September that the world found out about Selena Gomez's kidney transplant. Selena has suffered with Lupus disease since she was diagnosed in 2014. For those of you who may not know, lupus is a fatal inflammatory disease that results in the body's immune system attacking its own tissues and organs.
Lupus can affect many aspects of one's health, from joints and skin to kidneys, blood cells, your brain, heart and lungs. Anxiety, panic attacks and depression are also side effects of lupus, which explains why Selena has sought treatment for mental health disorders in the past.

This past summer, Selena admitted in an emotional Instagram post, that lupus had caused her kidneys to fail. "I am very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music...I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health."
"I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much."
Francia and Selena sat down with Savannah Guthrie from Today to discuss the surgery for the first time. The Today Show announced that they would air the segment this Monday, October 30th.

A source told Us Weekly that, "Francia is a wonderful friend with a huge heart. They’ve thought of each other as sisters, and beyond their obvious bond through work and womanhood, they also share a lot through their faith and being Latina. Francia is incredibly supportive and would provide a shoulder to cry on for any friend in need. She really is a wonderfully special person."
When Guthrie asked Selena if she felt like Francia saved her life, Selena sternly replied, "Because she did." Make sure to tune in to Today on Monday for the full interview.
