Selena Gomez's Woody Allen Movie Might Get Shut Down Thanks To #TimesUp
After years of public scrutiny, Hollywood is finally starting to turn its back on Woody Allen. Over decades Allen has been accused of sexual assault by his adoptive daughter, Mia Farrow, Dylan Farrow. Allegations first rose when Dylan was 7, though they have been dismissed by courts and celebrities alike for lacking credible evidence. Matter only complicated when Allen's affair with his girlfriend Mia Farrow's other daughter, 19-year-old Soon-Yi Previn, was made public.
A-list stars have rushed to Allen's side starring in countless of his films throughout the years, often hoping for an Oscar like Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz or Diane Keaton. While Allen's films have been Academy favourites in the past, in the era of #MeToo the director is finding himself in unfamiliar, unfavourable territory.
Since the downfall of disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood is publicly condemning and disowning the industries abusers. Finally, after years and years, Allen is getting the treatment he so rightfully deserves from talent and production with the stalling of his newest film A Rainy Day In New York. The film is set to be released by Amazon later this year, but was disrupted by some press from its stars, Timothee Chamalet and Selena Gomez.
Chamalet and Gomez both decided to donate their film salaries to #TimesUp in support of survivors. Chamalet publicly made the donation announcement on his Instagram while weeks later Gomez quietly, and perhaps cowardly, followed suit.
An industry executive told Page Six that,“‘Rainy Day’ will either not come out or [will] get dumped by Amazon without any p.r. or theatrical release." The executive also notes that Allen is having trouble casting his new film.
A separate executive commented on actor's dissociation with Allen saying, "Where were these champions before [last] October?” a studio head, who likewise chose not to reveal his or her name, asked. “It’s pathetic that it took the #MeToo movement for these actors to grow a pair of balls. It’s embarrassing that Allen’s been revered by Hollywood for years and constantly nominated for awards. Same with Roman Polanski [the director who pled guilty to unlawful intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in 1977, then fled the US for France to avoid extradition].
