Shania Twain Shares That She “Found A New Voice” After Lyme Disease Battle & Likes It

Nothing's bringing her down! Shania Twain's Lyme disease battle caused a temporary voice loss which took her out of singing for years. After multiple open-throat surgeries, she shared that she's back on her feet with a "sexy" new voice.

PEOPLE shared an exclusive first look at Twain's upcoming interview on Sunday Today with Willie Geist. 

The Windsor born superstar contracted Lyme disease in 2003 which had a drastic effect on her vocal cords. 

Speaking to Geist, the singer shared, "I was very, very sad about it to the point where I just — I felt I had no other choice but to accept it — and that I would never sing again...I was mourning the expression of my voice."

Twain's first self-titled album dropped in 1993, followed by another two albums every other year. In 2002, she released Up! but after that, there was a 15-year gap until her most recent album Now came out in 2017.

During that time period, she was battling the tick-borne illness.

Twain apparently isn't the only Canadian singer to battle Lyme disease since Avril Lavigne contracted it in 2015 and Justin Bieber faced it in 2019.

PEOPLE notes that Twain "underwent multiple open-throat surgeries amid her recovery" in order to help her return to the spotlight.

She told Geist, "It was little by little because the surgery is invasive. It’s given me more room to play, to be honest. I have gravel, I think it's kind of sexy. I’m never gonna have my own voice again, I’m okay with that. I’ve found a new voice and I like it."

Twain recently added 14 new dates on her Las Vegas residency called Let's Go!. Concerts are at the Zappos Theater and will run until December 12.

This is her second residency since the Shania: Still the One ran from 2012 to 2014 as she got back on her feet.

Her return to the stage came as great news since she said that "it would have killed me not to be able to ever sing again. I wasn’t going to let my life be over if I wasn’t going to be able to sing again, but I would have been very sad and I would have mourned that forever. But it is a great love of mine and a passion — that’s what got me back on stage again, because I could. Now I have more appreciation for it than ever."

The 54-year-old is no stranger to personal and emotional battles in her life. Growing up, she lived in poverty and lost her mother and step-father when she was 22-years-old, making her the legal guardian of four younger siblings.

During her Lyme disease fight, she went through a tumultuous divorce from Mutt Lange after he fell in love with their mutual friend. Out of that came her current marriage with Frédéric Thiébaud.
