It's been quite a while since we've seen the Canadian actor shine in a hit movie. That changes this year since he has a leading role in the flick based on the '90s video game. Sonic the Hedgehog starring Jim Carrey features his quirky personality and was filmed all over BC.

The 58-year-old actor plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the film coming to theatres this month.

According to IMDb, the main production location was in Ladysmith, as well as Vancouver Island, Coquitlam, Burnaby, and Fanny Bay. Other filming locations listed on IMDb are San Francisco, Morocco, and New York City.

In September 2018, CTV News reported that filming in Ladysmith was wrapping up. The news outlet claims that "Carrey hasn't been spotted so far during filming, but star James Marsden was seen filming scenes in a police uniform."

IMDb notes that Marsden's character is Tom Wachowski, a sheriff who teams up with Sonic to defeat Dr. Robotnik.

Other stars in the film include Ben Schwartz who voices Sonic, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, and Neal McDonough as Major Bennington.

Carrey's character is an evil scientist that discovers the blue hedgehog who has superspeed powers and wants to capture him for world domination.

His IMDb page notes that this is his first film since 2016 when he starred in Dark Crimes. For the past two years, he's starred in the TV series Kidding as Jeff Pickles.

The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released in April 2019 but according to Looper, it received quite a bit of criticism over the way Sonic was digitally animated. A second updated trailer featuring a redesigned Sonic came out in November 2019. Fans on Twitter were elated to see Carrey's film comeback.

Yesterday, the actor sat down with Good Morning America for his new movie, except that he really didn't do that much sitting. It was a pretty bizarre interview but showed off his quirky and energetic sense of humour as he bounced around and had fun with host Michael Strahan.

You can catch Carrey in Sonic the Hedgehog hitting theatres on February 14.
