Today is bound to be a tense day for Toronto fans as reports continue to suggest that a Kawhi Leonard Lakers contract could be a real possibility this upcoming season. Thankfully, news of the deal hasn't been confirmed and Raptors fans can still hold out hope that the King of the North will return to the 6ix for another glorious season. However, that hasn’t stopped Twitter from descending into chaos.
Broderick Turner of the LA Times recently revealed several behind-the-scenes details of Kawhi’s meetings with the Lakers. According to Turner, who spoke with Spectrum Sportsnet, the Finals MVP had a very positive phone call with Magic Johnson about the Lakers on Sunday, in which he able to gather some crucial details about what he can expect from the team.
“Kawhi and his uncle, Uncle Dennis, they talked to Magic several times. They’ve also talked with Rob Pelinka. They want to meet with Jeanie Buss and Magic,” Turner said.
Turner wasn’t the only one claiming to have the inside scoop about Kawhi. Former Cleveland Cavalier Kendrick Perkins also weighed in on the issue:
“Just heard that Kawhi is meeting with the Clippers tonight but the Lakers hold the upper hand, unless Doc works his Magic tonight it’s looking very strong that Kawhi will be in Purple and Gold!” Perkins wrote.
Fans were alarmed even more when fake accounts began stoking the rumour fire on Twitter. One false report claimed that Kawhi had already accepted a multi-million dollar deal from the team:
Twitter users, being Twitter users, took the whole thing as an opportunity to out-meme each other:
The reality is, though, until the moment Kawhi announces his plans for next season, we are all going to be stuck in the dark. Toronto fans can only hope that an NBA Championship win was enough incentive for the MVP to re-sign.
