The Toronto Raptors will undoubtedly be hard-pressed this upcoming season to repeat as NBA Champions. Predicting how the team will fare with superstar Kawhi Leonard’s future firmly sealed in L.A. is a guessing game at best. But one thing about next year is clear: the Raptors new jersey design is one of the sharpest the league has to offer.
Friday morning, the club released a series of teaser videos showcasing a new retro jersey for the 2019-20 season, a look that a lot of Raps fans will recognize from the club’s championship parade in June.
The jersey pays homage to the team’s inaugural look from the franchise’s first season back in 1995. Its style is one that a lot of fans and pundits from around the league originally poked fun at and criticized for being too childish or resembling that of another purple famous dinosaur.
Although, after taking in these videos, it looks like it will be the Raptors getting the last laugh, as this reimagined retro look is seriously sharp, and fans already seem to agree.
The release of the new jerseys comes less than one week after leaked images of a potential retro-themed court the team could be playing on this season surfaced online. Of course, that court is also based off the inaugural purple and red style of the 1995 uniforms.
The Raptors open their title defence on opening night, Oct. 22, 2019, when first-overall draft pick Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans visit Scotiabank Arena.
The team will also be raising their championship banner to the rafters and accepting their championship rings the same night.
