Now that the Raptors have won the NBA championship, the hot topic on everyone's mind is whether Kawhi will stay in Toronto with the Raptors or sign with the Lakers? There have been all types of speculations and the Raptors star has stayed pretty silent on which team he's thinking of signing with. Now, new reports are saying something that is pretty unexpected. According to analysts, Kawhi Leonard is not expected to sign with the L.A. Lakers like many people have been saying, but it's between two other teams.
Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN's Senior NBA Insider, spoke on Get Up about Kawhi and his future in the NBA. He believes that Kawhi will sign with either the Raptors (here's hoping!) or the L.A. Clippers. He pointed out that one of the basketball star's big focus is still Los Angeles, but not the Lakers like people have been expecting.
"The reality is Kawhi Leonard's focused on Los Angeles, but it's the Clippers, not the Lakers. No. 1, they don't have the money to sign him. And two, the idea of him being a third wheel on a team trying to create a superteam, that has not been Kawhi's M.O.," said Wojnarowski, according to Bleacher Report.
"The Clippers are poised to be able to lure him from Toronto. This will be a Raptors-Clippers fight down to the end. He may take meetings with more teams; it's not even certain he'd even take a meeting with the Lakers right now."
So what has Kawhi had to say in response to the question that everyone's dying to know the answer to? In typical Kawhi fashion, he's been a man of a few words.
During the Raptors victory parade in Toronto on Monday, the basketball star said that he hasn't been focusing on his future team. “I’m enjoying this” he said, TSN reports. “It’s not time to stress, it’s still time to have some fun. I’ve just been enjoying my experience.”
“I’m going to take the right time,” he also said. “You don’t need too many days to figure it out. We’ll see what happens. Once that time comes, then we’ll all lay the pros and cons out."
It's no secret that Canadians really want Kawhi to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors. All sorts of incentives have been thrown at him as efforts to convince him to stay. From a free multi-million dollar Toronto penthouse to free Kraft Dinner for life, Canadians are trying everything to keep him from leaving. People were even naming their babies after Kawhi.
We won't find out Kawhi's decision until the NBA free agency kicks off. It will start on June 30 at 6 PM ET. Until then, we'll be on edge and hoping with everything that this "fun guy" will re-sign with the Raptors, and bring his iconic laugh with him.
