Miami Heat Players Honor Kobe Bryant In A Unique Way, With their Shoes
As the NBA community continues to reel from the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and the other victims of that fatal Sunday helicopter crash, various teams and players have been paying their respects to Kobe in different ways. From social posts, video reactions, and even murals every homage to the star has been heartfelt in its own way, and the Miami Heat is honoring Kobe in a truly unique way — with their kicks.
It has not been an easy few days for the world of basketball and beyond. Since Sunday, we have fallen witness to some of the biggest and most elite athletes in the world, and rightfully so.
From personal connections to witnessing Bryant's finesse on the court, everyone seems to admire him, his legacy, and the passion he brought to the game.
Bryant's untimely death, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna's and the other six victims on that helicopter has reminded the world how brief and senseless life can be.
Players around the NBA have been expressing their grief through touching gestures like voluntarily allowing the 24-second shot clock to run down (Kobe wore the #24 jersey) on their first possession.
As the Miami Heat took to the court to face the Orlando Magic, basketball was far from the only thing on our minds. The exterior of the American Airlines Arena revealed what everyone was really thinking.
Instead of the usual "Culture" banner hanging from the front of the AAA, a projection of Kobe Bryant shone for all to see.
Inside the court, the feeling was not too different.
Instead of players donning their usual game shoes of choice, multiple members of The Heat had special tributes to the late basketball great and his daughter on their feet.
Derrick Jones Jr., Tyler Herro, Goran Dragic, Bam Adebayo and more all had their shoes scribbled with Kobe and Gigi hashtags in Memorium of the basketball legend.
Jones Jr. and Adebayo in particular, were wearing Kobe's signature Nike shoes in addition to having handwritten tributes to the former LA Laker.
Bam Adebayo led the Heat to a win against their Florida rivals with a triple-double, almost as if Kobe himself blessed their very shuffles across the court.
The Heat center usually dedicates his triple-doubles to his mom (aww) but last night, Adebayo made sure we knew who that performance was for: Kobe.
On his Instagram, the Heat player said, "You was with me tonight Bean," in reference to Bryant.
Adebayo and the rest of the Heat team will look to build on Monday night's victory Tuesday at 8 p.m. against the Boston Celtics at the AAA.
