You always see in the movies where the best dates end in laying in a field looking up at the stars. With all the streets lights and busy streets in Atlanta and other cities throughout Georgia, it could be hard to make this happen. It just so happens that this State Park in North Georgia is thee spot to stargaze and spend your day adventuring around a mountain.
Fort Mountain State Park is located near Ellijay. There are amazing overlooks where you can see the tops of mountains in the distance and low valleys up close. There are close to 60 miles of hiking trails and there is even an option to camp.
The best part about this park is that it is one of the best for stargazing, and it is proven that fall and winter are the best times to stargaze. Earthsky.org has said this spot is on the top of the list when it comes to looking at the night sky.
This park sits 2,850 feet above sea level which makes for a great spot to hike. You can choose what type of hike you want to go on since there are so many miles of trails.
One of the longer trails, coming in at 8.2-miles round trip, might be the one you want to invest your time in. The Gahuti Trail and Cool Springs Overlook is a moderate hike that takes you to the summits of Cohutta and Fort Mountain.
There are a few cottages on site that you can rent, or you can just bring your tent and set up at a campsite. You will want to spend the night here at the beginning of October because it is the prime spot to see the meteor shower that will be going on.
With multiple fields and dark spots throughout the park, you will see millions of stars at night and even catch meteor showers. It is the perfect end to an adventurous day.
There are so many activities to do and adventures to go on during your trip to Fort Mountain; it is pretty much a dream date.
