In 2018, Michigan became one of eleven states to legalize weed for recreational use, but the tradition of marijuana in Ann Arbor has been going on for a lot longer than that. Hash Bash, which is returning this spring, is the ultimate stop for any pothead.
Since the event is held in April, people often assume that it's going to be on the 20th (insert 4/20 joke here), but it's actually always on the first Saturday of the month.
The festivities will start at high noon. Thousands of people gather at the Diag — the center of the University of Michigan's campus — to listen to speeches and performances related to the legalization of cannabis.
There will also be vendors selling every kind of weed accessory that you can possibly imagine. There are usually people walking around handing out free edibles and weed, but please be careful about who you trust.
Last year, 10,000 people came to celebrate and that was 6 months before anyone could actually buy weed legally!
These days, a handful of dispensaries in Ann Arbor are the only spots that sell legal recreational weed in the state and the lines were out the door and down the block on their opening days.
When you walk through the normally sleepy campus, the first thing you may notice will be the smell and the smoke.
It's inescapable and most people attending do not mind it at all.
It's pretty cool to see these beautiful academic buildings clouded by people enjoying their Saturday while smoking some pot.
This is going to be the 38th annual festival, the tradition began in 1972, and the fact that it's actually legal this year is huge!
The event creates such a fun atmosphere in the city because people from all around the state come out to see the festival. It's a great time for the community.
The past celebrations have always had a political angle to them because they wanted the state to legalize pot. Now that they've won, who knows how big the party will get.
When: April 4, 2020 @ high noon
Address: 913 S. University Ave., Ann Arbor, MI
Why You Need To Go: This festival is always fun, but this year is extra special since 2020 will be the first year that recreational marijuana is legal and actually being sold in Michigan. Spirits will be high and it's going to be a very exciting atmosphere.
