Whether we like it or not, Canadians have become all too familiar with the same old interior spaces in the last year. As the world came to what felt like a grinding halt, it can sometimes seem like innovation and creativity stalled along with it.
But hardship breeds innovation, as they say, and in this challenge-filled reality, you can bet that creative folk have risen to the occasion.
For proof, just take a look at the Ryerson School of Interior Design, and the ingenious virtual reinvention of their annual Year End Show.
Faced with a year of tough and unique circumstances, the student-run Year End Show Committee set about a mission of using their virtual platform to have an impact.
Titled Re-vision, this year's student work showcase focuses on equity, sustainability and intersectionality through the lens of interior design. It's their first-ever digital Year End Show — and you're invited.
The goal of the Re-vision Digital Design Festival is to acknowledge student excellence and open up conversations about design with people who have been traditionally excluded.
The barrier-breaking virtual event is open to all who value positive change and features tutorials, workshops, keynote speaker presentations and, of course, student showcases presented over five days from May 5 to May 9 (with May 6 to 8 open to the public).
It's an inspiring time to begin a career in interior design as the industry matures beyond tradition and exclusion, and this new generation of designers is poised to revolutionize design with values of sustainability, accessibility and intersectionality.
With a packed agenda of keynotes, roundtables, and tutorials, Re-vision is an opportunity for exploration and education — and it's entirely free.

On Thursday, May 6, the program features Colour in Urban Landscape, Art and Design Lunch and Learn at 12 p.m. EST and a workshop on designing within a pandemic at 5 p.m. EST.
May 7 includes Indigenous Design Lunch and Learn at noon, with the evening centred around discussions on equity.
Saturday, May 8 is jam-packed with tutorials and keynote speakers including a Wellness Talk at 10 a.m., keynotes on sustainability and accessibility at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively, as well as discussions on affordable housing and women entrepreneurship in the afternoon and evening.
By bringing together local, national and international design communities and the public in an engaging conversation, the design students at Ryerson hope to revise, reform and renew global practices.
