This River In Florida Is One Of The Best Places To Go Fossil Hunting

Chances are if you've been shell hunting before, there was a time or two you find something cool and unexpected like a shark tooth or fossil. If you love finding these gems, there's a place in Florida where the fossil supply has been known to be high; you can actually hunt for fossils at Canoe Outpost - Peace River.

At this watersport outpost, rent yourself a canoe or bring your own kayak and trek the river in search of fossilized treasures. Fossils are known to be found along the Peace River's tea-colored banks - particularly after a  storm and when the water level is low.

Fossil hunters begin their trip with a short bus shuttle ride up to the launch point, where you then have the whole day (or less depending on the experience you pick) to look for treasures. Your float leads you back to the outpost to your vehicle so you end exactly where you started.

During your trip downstream, you'll have the opportunity to use a rented sifter to swish and swash for megalodon teeth, fossilized horse teeth, and sometimes even other crazy and unexpected things. If you want to look extra hard, they also offer a shovel rental - you'll feel like a little archeologist with all of your tools.

Shark teeth are the most common thing that you'll find here; most hunters leave with multiple, coming in all different shapes and sizes.

If hunting for fossils isn't your thing, the outpost is also great for fishing and camping. The beautiful tea-colored river flows through 106 miles of central Florida's landscape, with the forests surrounding it offering gorgeous river views.
