The Best Georgia Islands To Visit Include Jekyll Island During Its Treasure Hunt

If you've spent any time on the Georgia coast, then you know Jekyll Island is a hot spot for adventurers looking to enjoy the beautiful driftwood beaches and natural beauty of this special part of the state. That may be why it's considered one of the best Georgia islands to visit.

However, Jekyll Island gets even cooler in January and February. Every year, the island hand-picks artists from around the country to create unique glass floats for a hide-and-seek event on the island called Jekyll Island Treasures.

Every day during these two months, volunteers hide a few plastic globes around the island for visitors to search for. If you find one, you can take it into the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center and trade it in for one of the gorgeous glass floats.

Two to five of these globes are hidden per day, and they can be almost anywhere on the island that's open to the public. There will be about 250 in total hidden this year, so if you're determined, there's a good chance you can find one.

Even if you can't find one on your own, you can always buy one from the guest information center, so you don't have to leave empty-handed.

This tradition got started back in the 1950s. In the early 1900s, fishermen used to use similar glass globes on their nets as markers. They would sometimes wash up on the beach, and it became a popular hobby for beachgoers to look for them.

They may not come from fishermen now, but finding one feels just as special as it did back then.

While you do have to pay for parking on the island, the actual treasure hunt is completely free. Plus, it's a perfect opportunity to explore the island in a whole new way.

You can seriously have fun on Jekyll Island any time of the year. Whether you visit to take a horseback tour or just to hang out on the driftwood beach in a hammock, you're sure to have an amazing time.
