Just when you thought Netflix couldn’t get any better, it does. Every week, the streamer continues to release new trailers for their upcoming shows and movies. Most recently, they gave a sneak preview of a film called The Half of It, and viewers already can’t wait to check out the new teen drama.

The movie tells the story of Ellie Chu, an introverted high school student who earns money by doing her classmates’ English homework. Ellie’s life takes a sudden turn when a jock named Paul commissions her for assistance—but not with the kind of writing that she’s used to doing.

Instead of writing a paper on Romeo and Juliet, Paul wants Ellie to pen some love letters from him to Aster, one of the most popular girls in their school. As Ellie gets to work, she and Paul become unlikely friends, but she’s carrying a major secret—she also has a crush on Aster.

The Half of It can be compared to other sweet teen romance movies like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, but it’s important to note that it’s also bringing a unique, LGBTQ+ angle to the narrative.

The Netflix original stars Enrique Murciano (Without a Trace), Becky Ann Baker (Freaks and Geeks), Leah Lewis (Guidance), Catherine Curtin (Orange Is the New Black), Collin Chou (Flash Point), and Wolfgang Novogratz (The Last Summer).

“I remember reading the synopsis and thinking to myself, ‘Oh, this is new. This is very brand new,’ Lewis, who plays Ellie in the film, told EW. “But when I read the script, that was when I remember telling my rep and the ones that are closest to me, ‘If I’m not Ellie Chu, I will be so upset. I will cry if I don’t somehow get to be a part of this incredible project.’”

Those who have watched the newly released trailer are already raving about the upcoming film.

“I can’t believe they are giving us both a lesbian high school movie and a story about importance of friendship featuring a boy and a girl. This better be good!” one comment reads.

“Not gonna lie, this looks really endearing,” commented another viewer.
