Good skin is truly something we all strive for. But have you ever heard that good skin starts from the inside? What you feed your body is just as important, if not more, than what you treat your skin with. It's hard to believe that the reason you're breaking out could be because you're allergic to something you're eating, but it's more common than you think. Your skin is an exact reflection of what is happening inside of your gut, and it's totally not fair, but that's life. 

There are some lucky people that can have good skin without a good diet, but feeding your body right won't just get you good skin. It comes with a million benefits and that's more important than good skin. However, if your goal is good skin, it goes hand in hand with adopting a healthier lifestyle whether you 'can't live without cheese' or not. 

To get that glowy, radiant skin without a highlighter, these foods will help you achieve that. However, you also need to know the foods to avoid if you're trying to get good skin. A healthy gut = healthy skin.

Should: Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Okay, omega-3 fatty acids are essential for good and glowing skin. We need fat in our diets to survive, however, a ton of people get the wrong fats in their diet. Omega-6 fatty acids are inflammatories, which is something we don't want. If you suffer from acne, omega-3 fatty acids will save your life and clear up your skin. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in walnuts, fatty fish, flaxseed, chia seeds, grass-fed beef, and more.

Shouldn't: Dairy

Dairy is the culprit of bad skin. A lot of people think that to be allergic to dairy or lactose intolerant, you have to get stomach aches or break out into hives. No. Dairy, specifically cow's milk, spikes blood sugar levels and when your blood sugar isn't balanced, that can cause breakouts. There are also so many hormones in cow's milk, considering most of the cows are pregnant. So that means when us humans consume the milk, acne, aging, inflammation and the breakdown of our skin happens. If you eat a lot of dairy and are suffering from skin issues, I'd recommend cutting it out for at least a month and see if your symptoms disappear.

Should: Antioxidants 

Our bodies naturally carry antioxidants at all times. However, since our bodies are filled with free-radicals, it doesn't level out and that's the reason we show signs of aging, and that's also why antioxidants are a huge part of skincare products today. The good thing is that antioxidants can be found in so many foods, specifically fruits and veggies. The more colourful the fruit or veggie, the more antioxidants it holds. If you're looking for glowing, youthful, and healthier skin, than I would consider adding berries, dark chocolate, cilantro, pecans and kidney beans into your diet daily.

Shouldn't: Sugar

There have been so many times when I've heard that someone (or myself) has had too much sugar, maybe from Halloween or realistically, PMS, and they wake up the next day with a huge breakout. Yet again, it all comes down to blood sugar levels. Keeping your blood sugar levels stable will not only balance your hormones but it will help you find what foods work for your body and what doesn't. If you find yourself reaching for a Coke, reach for a Kombucha instead which has natural sugars and the same fizziness to it. Sugar isn't the be all end all of skin, but it can make a huge difference when it comes to glowing skin.

Should: Green Tea

Not only is green tea great to drink, but it's also amazing to put directly on your skin. Much like berries, it has a ton of antioxidants but it also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It helps fight aging, and for those with oily skin, it can help shrink your pores. Whether you're drinking it or putting it directly on your skin to help a breakout (yup, it does that too!), the benefits green tea has are unless. That's why a ton of skincare products have green tea extract in them.

Shouldn't: Fried Food

Everyone knows that fried food is bad for you, but do you know exactly why? We talked about free radicals a little bit before, but free radicals act like toxins in the body. They also cause oxidative stress in the cells in your body, which causes aging. When foods are fried, they're mainly fried in oils like vegetable and canola oil - and both of those oils release free radicals into the body. When you age faster because of the foods you're eating, this includes dark spots, wrinkles, blemishes, etc. To avoid this happening, opt for grilled or baked options.

Should: Water

Not a food, but an absolute necessity. When your skin is dehydrated, you can tell. Drinking water helps aid in digestion, absorption, circulation, and so much more. Your skin is an organ, and without water, the cells in your skin won't be able to function properly. You can tell if your skin is dehydrated if it's flaky, tight, and dry. You should be drinking at least two litres of water each day if you want glowing and radiant skin. So many people don't realize that keeping hydrated benefits EVERY part of your body.

Shouldn't: Caffeine 

On another note, in order to stay hydrated, you need to quit it with the caffeine. If you absolutely can't live without caffeine, then make sure you're getting enough water in like I mentioned earlier. Not only is caffeine not good for your skin, but neither are all of the additives that usually come with caffeine. The sugar in sodas, the cream in your coffee, the milk in chocolate, etc. When you think about it, you're really doing a number on your skin if you're always indulging in these foods/drinks. In order to keep your skin at the best it can be, I suggest choosing one a day or trying to give it up altogether. If you're an avid soda drinker, there's no way you won't notice huge benefits after trading in the sugary drink for litres of water!
