A lot of people think you need to break a sweat to have a real workout. That's definitely not true. While breaking a sweat means you worked your body hard and got your heart rate up, LISS (low intensity steady state cardio) is also really good for your body.

LISS actually has so many benefits. Since your heart rate is staying the same the entire workout, it helps you burn more fat since you're breathing more normally. When more oxygen gets into your lungs, and since fat needs oxygen in order to be broken down, it's a win win.

LISS is actually my favourite form of cardio. I love HIIT, don't get me wrong, but going on long walks is like therapy to me and really helps clear my mind. Whether you're sad, mad, happy or confused, going on walks will help you think straight while listening to your favourite music or audiobook.

Walking doesn't get as much credit as it should. People think that walking is the lazy version of exercising, when it's really not. You can walk for 4 miles easily and that's hard on your body. It's of course not as difficult as running 4 miles, but it takes longer and your body becomes exhausted earlier than running.

Aside from just burning about 150 calories from walking for 30 minutes a day, a ton of other benefits come from it. Think about it, we're on our phones for probably 30 minutes at a time searching through social media to see what we missed. Instead, take it outside and call a friend to catch up while going on a walk for 30 minutes.

Not only will you feel calmer, but your legs will become more toned. If you're sitting for most of the day and don't get any exercise, this will improve the strength in your legs for sure. And if you are active, there is nothing wrong with going on a 30 minute walk to wind down, it's super relaxing.

It's also been proven that walking regularly helps reduce the appearance of varicose veins. If that's a problem for you, that will only be one benefit from walking. The rest will come and you'll thank yourself. Walking also helps improve digestion, especially if you find yourself getting bloated a lot. It may seem like the best thing to do after a heavy meal is lay in bed watching Netflix, but walking will get everything moving and will help when you're feeling too full.

Even better, once you start walking for 30 minutes a day, it'll become a piece of cake. You won't even think about it and you'll be able to up it to 45 minutes, and hour and then it may even motivate you to lift weights or try new exercises. Walking is amazing for beginners, or trained athletes. Everyone can benefit from walking, since our bodies are not made to sit all day.
