The city of Edmonton, Alberta will soon be home to a magical ice village for the fifth winter in a row. We're not talking about little ice sculptures, we're talking massive ice castles, ice slides, twinkle lights, and more. Edmonton Ice Castles 2020 is a must-see winter attraction that everyone in Alberta (and Canada) should check out.

We all hoped Ice Castles would be enchanting Edmonton for another year and they have officially confirmed that our dreams will be coming true in 2020. On Thanksgiving Day, Monday, October 14, 2019, Ice Castles posted on Facebook announcing that they will be returning to Edmonton for their fifth season. This year, we can expect the winter wonderland to open in early January, weather dependant, according to Global News. If you're not sure what Ice Castles are, here's what you need to know.

Ice Castles is truly something you'd find in a fairytale. Founded in 2011, Ice Castes is in six locations around North America and one happens to be Edmonton. According to the Ice Castles website, each castle weighs an astounding 20 million pounds and 12,000 icicles are grown every single day.

The design for this year's Ice Castle in Edmonton hasn't been officially released yet, but past years' castles have included there are also ice slides, fire pits, ice thrones to sit on, and more.

Though we can't say exactly what this year's castle will look like, we are certain that it will be total magic. Ice castles are magical in their essence, you really just can't go wrong.

According to the Ice Castles website, the entire thing began with the most wholesome goal in mind: "to make people smile." The founder, Brent Christensen, created a (much smaller) ice castle in his front yard for his children.

When kids from around the neighbourhood took notice, he realized it could be something much bigger. What the neighbourhood kids playfully named “Ice Castle” in Christensen’s front yard, is now what you see today in six North American cities.

These dreamy castles are adored by people of all ages, make for an adorable date idea, and offer a unique photo opportunity for anyone who's in it for the pictures.

Every year, we all say we're going to do all the cute winter activities, but it rarely pans out. If you're going to do one thing, just one, make it this one. You won't be disappointed.
