You Can Get Up Close And Hang Out With Kangaroos At The Toronto Zoo This Summer
Zoo workers will make sure that guests are staying in the boundaries and following the rules.
Ever wanted to visit Australia? I'd love to go for the beaches and surfing, but mostly I'd want to go to see kangaroos in the wild. Right now, you can put your travel plans on pause since the Toronto Zoo Kangaroo Walk Thru is now open and you won't want to miss your chance to get up close to adorable roos and wallabies.
You'll see western grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies and Bennet's wallabies hopping around in their zoo habitat as you walk through a marked trail. This is a unique chance to get up close with the 'roos. Did you know that these animals are crepuscular? That means they're most active at dawn and dusk so maybe a late-afternoon visit will let you see the animals in action!
Narcity spoke with Eric Cole, Acting Director of Wildlife and Welfare at the Toronto Zoo about the newly reopened feature to find out more. “The kangaroos keep their distance and there’s always a zoo worker in the paddock too to make sure that they’re safe and that guests are staying in the boundaries and following the rules,” Cole said. “It’s an opportunity for people to share a space with the animal without a barrier between them and you only ever get as close to the kangaroos as they want.”
If you head to the zoo right now you might get a chance to spot the tiniest joey you've ever seen. "Tori" is a western grey kangaroo and a first-time mom and you can sometimes spot her baby peeking its head out from her pouch. It could be months before the joey starts to venture out on his own but lucky visitors to the zoo can see him while he's still in the pouch.
The Kangaroo Walk-Thru is back after a hiatus where it was closed due to logistical reasons when the Giant Panda Experience was opened in 2013. Some of the kangaroos and wallabies in the Kangaroo Walk-Thru might be a little shy so it's important to stay on the marked path and keep your voices down when you're in their habitat so that they feel comfortable. This rare opportunity to get up close to kangaroos is going to make your next visit to the Toronto Zoo even more adorable!
