You Can Visit One Of The World's Largest Natural Rock Bridges In Arizona
This park "rocks."
Not only ants and people build bridges, but Mother Nature also makes some pretty sweet ones herself. The Tonto Natural Bridge in Arizona is thought to be the world's largest made of natural travertine. It's only an hour and a half from Phoenix, perfect for a quick day trip.
This geological wonder is in Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, which costs $7 per person to enter. The park is open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
There are three hiking trails that you can use to explore the bridge, plus another which takes you into the Pine Creek natural area. The bridge is a whopping 183 feet high! All of the trails take you down to the 400-foot tunnel underneath the colossal rock structure.
Currently, all paths are closed due to high creek flow. Be sure to check the website for trail conditions before heading out.
The trails are all relatively short, ranging from 300 feet to 2,200 feet long, but they are all steep and considered strenuous. Hiking shoes are recommended, as is ample time to safely descend and ascend.
If the trails are slippery or you don't want to, you can walk along the paved trail up top that takes you to four different viewing decks for various sights of the formation. You can take all the pics without having to break a sweat.
During the spring months, there's sometimes a waterfall that cascades over the bridge, making for some beautiful views from the tunnel.
Dogs are not allowed to use the trails that lead to the tunnel, but they are allowed on the viewing decks. You can take your pup along for the adventure.
The park is in Pine, Arizona, about 10 miles north of Payson. It's perfect for a day trip!
They say not to chase waterfalls, but how can you not when they're this dreamy?
There's also the Goodfellow Lodge in the park for overnight stays. This historic building is adorably rustic, and the dining room has communal picnic tables and a wood stove.
For an awesome and immersive trip, you and some friends can stay the night and really get into the history of the area.
Grab your squad for a day trip to this awesome area or make it a stop on your next Arizona. It's a relatively secret spot so you probably won't have to fight crowds to check it out.
