If you're a horror movie fan like us then you've probably seen the terrifying movie, The Descent. It's one of the many reasons why we're wary of going into underground caves. But we've found an underground cave in Arizona that we are dying (not literally) to explore.
Preacher Canyon Cave is one of those hidden gems located in Payson, Arizona. It's so secret that you might miss it if you don't know what to look for. You can hike here year-round, but it's possible that roads might be closed in the winter due to snow.
The hike into the cave is easy but can be rocky and slippery at times, so plan ahead. Inside the cave is dark, so it's important to bring plenty of flashlights, water, and even some snacks.
The cave entrance is a small opening that will require you to crawl or scoot in. Since this short hike is underground, the cave will be chilly. Dress warm and consider bringing a hardhat just in case you slip.
Once you descend into the cave, you'll come across a large room with smaller rooms branching off the main one. You can even bring your furry friends with you.
Towards the back of the cave is a large pool of water, just like a mini lake. We recommend bringing gloves and knee pads to make your trip go smoother.
You can find more detailed directions here. It also doesn't hurt to ask some of the locals since this is one of Arizona's best-kept secrets.
Whether you're looking for a day filled with cave exploring or hiking underground, this secret cave gives us adventurer vibes.
