Who knew a bookshop could be so much fun? While tourists walk down the historic Spring Street every day, it’s easy to miss this local gem. Standing three stories tall, you’ll be amazed as soon as you step inside. Located in an abandoned bank, this California bookstore has tons of jaw-dropping features you won’t find in your regular mom and pop shop.
As LA’s largest used and new bookstore, it has been making readers happy ever since it first opened in 2005 in an old loft. Since then, the collection has grown to become a 22,000 square foot space with a beautiful mix of things old and new. Come to buy books, sell them, or for special events like a feminist book club and poetry readings.
Giant pillars run from the floor to the ceiling and rows upon rows of new and used books are housed in trendy packaging. On the first floor, there’s a large vintage section where you can score classic literature and antique poetry books from the 1800s for less than $6. Even the check-out counter is made entirely out of glued-together books.
To get to the oldest books they have in store, you’ll have to open an old vault door that leads you into a tiny wooden-floor reading room. Take up a seat on the creaky, old bench and browse through timeless classics for as long as you want and buy whichever ones you love the most. This scene is nothing short of a bibliophile’s dream.
When you’re done reading, head to the second floor for the best bird’s eye view and an awesome walk-through archway made entirely out of old books. Maybe you’ve seen the enviable pictures on Instagram; now it’s your turn to snap some photos and make some memories. Don’t be afraid to poke around a little bit. If you walk up one more flight of stairs to the third floor, you’ll come across an actual labyrinth.
Whether you’re a book lover or just came for the gram, chances are you may find this is one of the coolest places in all of LA. The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles is so much more than an independent bookstore; it’s an entirely immersive experience. Where else can you walk through tunnels made of books and meander through a library labyrinth while clutching your new favorite antique find?
