It’s no secret that Florida is a wild place with a rich history, and if you venture off the beaten path of towering coasters and thrilling rides, you can still find remnants of that long-forgotten past. There’s such a place right in Miami, away from the hustle and bustle. The ancient Spanish monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux actually dates back to the 12th century, and you can visit it today!

As what has been dubbed “the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history,” the church stands in North Miami as a symbol of endurance. While the place certainly feels old, you would probably never guess that it actually came all the way from 12th century Spain.

The church as it is now is a manifestation of history. The romantic Spanish architecture is something people normally fly across the Atlantic to see, but you can experience it right here in Miami.

Originally built in the medieval Spanish town of Sacramenia, and after monastic life came to an end under the rule of Isabella II of Spain, the building was dismantled in the 20th century and shipped to New York.

Due to financial difficulties, the original buyer was unable to rebuild the monastery, and it sat in crates in a warehouse in Brooklyn until 1952, when it was purchased by Raymond Moss and William Edgemon.

On a plant nursery in northern Miami, the reassembly of the church took 19 months and cost almost 1.5 million dollars.

Today, this gorgeous relic is owned by the Episcopal parish of St. Bernard de Clairvaux, and they give tours and allow visitors for just $10. Services are even still held there on Sundays in both Spanish and English.
