You Can Find Giant Trolls Hiding In These Florida Woodlands
Let the wild rumpus start!
There many things to find in the dense forests of Florida. Ancient trees, panthers (if you look hard enough), and even giant trolls! No, this isn’t a Florida Man story, it’s one of art and creativity. Using reclaimed wood, Danish artist Thomas Dambo builds these giant, sleepy-looking trolls worldwide & you can actually find them in Florida now.
Caught in a lumbering step as they seem to wander through the trees, the trolls are a lofty 13 to 60 feet tall and look like something straight out of Where The Wild Things Are.
Found in Pinecrest Gardens, South Florida’s premier Cultural Arts Park, the trolls are named Berta and Terje. Dambo and his team just put the finishing touches on the sculptures, using locally-sourced recycled and repurposed wood, broken branches, and fallen trees.
Dambo’s whimsical sculptures can be found worldwide, and this pair of brother and sister trolls are on a mission to take on the ills of the world and help out a wise old banyan tree.
The trolls are both mystifying and a statement that speaks to the fight of conservationism. Between 13 and 60 feet tall, a single troll uses almost 100 pallets worth of wood, 25,000 screws and many volunteers in order to make the sculpture.
Dambo’s placement of the trolls is purposeful. He hides them within the natural environment, hoping to draw people away from the hustle and bustle of cities and into the quiet of nature.
Dambo’s sustainable art projects first gained attention with Six Forgotten Giants. For this installation, he crafted and hid six trolls in forests and rivers around Copenhagen, which ended up being part art project, part scavenger hunt, and people immediately fell in love with the idea.
You can find Berta and Terje are relaxing at Pinecrest Gardens, having debuted for Art Basel. The pair will stick around for many years to come for the community to enjoy.
