New Orleans is known worldwide for its vibrant nightlife, but there's more to the state than Bourbon Street. You can escape the city for some peace and tranquility without actually leaving the perimeter. This butterfly garden in New Orleans is home to hundreds of different butterflies and it's a flower-filled oasis. This is the thing to do in New Orleans if you'll looking for a relaxing, unique experience.

Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is the largest free-standing museum dedicated to insects in the U.S. at 23,000 square-feet. If you're fascinated with tiny critters that populate the Earth, you'll be entranced with the 50 live exhibits dedicated to insects.

Whether they're the bugs that go crawl in the night like roaches or dainty ladybugs, you'll come face-to-face with some creepy crawlies. You'll even have several opportunities to hold them. To top it all off, there's a chance to eat them; chocolate chip cricket cookie, anyone?

If you're only a fan of pretty creatures with wings, you'll be right at home in the butterfly garden. This free-flight exhibit allows visitors to be surrounded by hundreds of butterflies that are soaring from flower to flower, and will definitely land on you.

The Japanese-style garden is filled with colorful flowers, a koi fish pond, hanging vines and rest areas. The exhibit is indoors so you can witness the butterflies in action during any time of the year.

The butterflies are notoriously curious and will land anywhere on your body, even your face. While you're not allowed to actively catch them, you don't have to worry about that because they will for sure come to you.

If you're unsure about when's the best time to come, mark your calendars for Crawloween, a special 3-day Halloween themed extravaganza where you can rock a butterfly-themed costume for some extra cash off the general admission price.

The early bird gets the worm so you can save money by buying a ticket online, bringing the price to $18.95.

Louisiana isn't the only state with a magic butterfly garden. Florida is home to a butterfly rainforest and Texas has its own garden that's only $10.
