The wintertime can easily become depressing when the only time that you're spending outside is when you're scraping the ice off of your windshield. If you need a bit of a pick-me-up then maybe you should get lost in a garden. If you need something to do in Ann Arbor, there's always the Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

It's totally free to walk into the greenhouses during business hours!

The conservatory boasts three different climates in three different structures.

You can explore a jungle-like atmosphere in the tropical house. This one is especially great to visit in the winter because these heat-loving plants bloom all year long in the greenhouse.

There are thorny cactuses and luxurious desert flowers in the arid house. These prickly new friends will hang out with you while you're exploring the sauna-like atmosphere.

Although Michigan does have a temperate climate, the temperate house specifically has plants that Michigan's weather wouldn't be able to support. That's pretty cool since all of the plants inside are something that you wouldn't have found in our state's nature.

When you walk into the conservatory from the parking lot, you'll see the gift store right away which has a ton of unique items.

The store has your usual gift shop fare, like greeting cards, novelty jewelry, and candles, but you can also buy a range of live plants or get some supplies together to make your own little fairy garden.

This is the ultimate winter Instagram opportunity to brighten up your feed. When your friends ask where you just went on vacation, you can tell them it was basically in your backyard!
