This Town Near Houston Is Having A 19th Century Charles Dickens-Themed Festival Next Month
Whether you're the guy singing Christmas tunes before Thanksgiving or if you turn into a Scrooge around the holidays, there's a celebration coming just for you. Next month, we will all be time-traveling back to the 19th century at a massive Charles-Dickens themed festival on Galveston Island.
On December 6-8, more than 35,000 guests will return to the 46th annual Dickens On The Strand in Galveston.
The festival will put you right on the streets of 19th-century Victorian London with parades, entertainment on every corner, carolers, bagpipers, and jugglers.
Costumed vendors will even be rolling their carts up and down the streets with Christmas foods and drinks, true-to-the-time crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations, and gift items.
There will be special interactive areas like Tiny Tim's Play Land and Shopkeeper Skills Village.
There will be numerous different events within the festival days such as "Dickens After Dark" and "Fezziwig's Friday Night."
Tickets are $13 for adults (or $15 if purchased after Dec. 1). However, show up in your best Victorian costume and get half off your entry.
Three descendants of Charles Dickens will even be in attendance to honor the legacy—Oliver 'Ollie' Dickens, a great-great-great-grandson, Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, a great-great-great-granddaughter, and Jane Dickens Monk, a great-great-granddaughter.
Think—less leggings, more hats. Ladies always wore hats. Big ones. And that was the easy part. The dresses were fitted and long skirts were worn over layered petticoats or a hoop. And dresses were accented with ribbons, braid, lace and flowers, and collars.
Yeah, you'll be earning that half-off ticket price. See their website for full descriptions of true-to-the-times men and women Victorian attire.
In addition, you can purchase a ticket for $125 to the special Saturday evening dinner in the historic 1859 Ashton Villa. The authentic dinner includes a four-course meal, A Christmas Carol reading, and a champagne toast to the Queen.
As usual, Dickens said it best, "There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour." And what better way to get some this holiday season?
