This Beautiful Texas Boardwalk Near Houston Takes You Right Into The Middle Of Wildlife
Free spot for jogging, horseback riding, and yoga.
A nice long walk out on the water is something every Houstonian needs every now and then to clear their senses of the city smog. The Cattail Marsh Scenic Wetlands & Boardwalk will do just the trick, and it only requires a short trip over to Beaumont.
This boardwalk was constructed in 2013 as the latest addition to the 26 year-old wastewater treatment system. And it aims to guide visitors straight into the Cattail Marsh—900 acres of wetland ecosystem that includes a wildlife refuge. More than 250 species of birds and various aquatic animals make their home on the refuge, and you actually get to meet them!
At the tip of the boardwalk, there is a viewing platform that offers the perfect view of an active birding area. It brings you a close encounter with Texas nature and history that you can't get anywhere else. And that means you have to beware of alligators, too!
But that's not all you get at this hidden Texas gem. On the wetlands, there is a gravel trail stretching over 12 miles of beautiful scenery that encourages jogging, hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
This spot is perfect for any moment that requires a view and, apparently, it's highly popular among yogis.
And it's definitely not bad for photographers looking for a new place to shoot. It's beautiful all year long, but spring is the height of mating season—so you'll definitely see plenty of birds and hear their songs.
The area is free to get into, and open everyday from 6 am to 9 pm. You can check out their trail maps here.
