This New Netflix Canada Series About Online Dating Is Based On A True Story And It's Beyond Scary

I think that for most of us, when we go on dates with people we've met online, we like to give them the benefit of the doubt. I don't like to assume right off the bat that this person could be a serial killer, or that they're crazy. The likelihood of those things happening seems pretty slim, but if we're being realistic, they do happen pretty often. In fact, Netflix Canada has a new series about online dating that's based on a true story, and it's BEYOND scary.

The show is called Dirty Johnand it stars Connie Britton (who you may recognize from American Horror Story), as well as Australian actor Eric Bana, who has starred in films such as Troy and The Time Traveler's Wife. The mini-series was first picked up by Bravo, but will now be available as a Netflix Original.

In case you haven't heard, Dirty John is about a woman, Debra, on the quest for love. She has a very successful life, is totally beautiful, and lives in Newport Beach, a place most of us could only DREAM of residing. She feels as though online dating will be a good way to meet her match, and soon after, she meets John.

To Debra, John is PERFECT. He showers her with affection, spoils her, and is totally good looking - what could possibly be wrong? To the people in Debra's life though, John is creepy - everyone thinks he has evil ulterior motives that involve going after Debra's money.

As time goes on, Debra begins to see through John's facade, but because she's blinded by love, she's unsure of what to think. The whole series is filled with plot twist after plot twist of endless drama, and when you remember that it's based on a true story, it becomes even scarier.

The series will be available for streaming on Netflix this Valentine's Day, February 14th. In the meantime, we recommend checking out the podcast the series is based on, as well as the trailer:
