Police in Ontario are no strangers to bizarre driving offences, but this case has to top the list. Reports surfaced of an arrest by Hamilton Police of a 21-year-old Toronto man who was driving on the Lincoln Alexander Parkway. The driver was pulled over by police after he was observed talking on his cell phone. However, the Toronto driver switched seats with a passenger while the vehicle was still in motion, police claim.
Although the passenger fled the scene, the driver was arrested and is set to appear in court today to answer to several criminal charges.
Yesterday, just before 7:00 PM, police observed a driver operating a vehicle while also using his cell phone. A police officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver and passenger switched seats as the vehicle continued westbound.
According to the police report, the car swerved, nearly striking the curb. The vehicle finally came to a stop after the driver and passenger switched seats, after which an officer approached the vehicle on the passenger side to arrest the original driver.
Reports indicate that after an altercation ensued, the original driver was able to escape. Although police set up a perimeter, he could not be located.
Police also reported that a bottle containing liquid Codeine, a controlled substance, was observed in plain sight inside the vehicle. Police confiscated the drug, and the male who remained at the vehicle was arrested and taken into police custody.
The male is currently bound by a probation order, police revealed upon further investigation. Police claim that his actions prior to his arrest represent violations to his probation order.
He has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, one count of obstructing a peace officer, one count of possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of failing to comply with probation.
Police report that the vehicle was towed to a secured compound.
