10 Self-Made Girl Bosses From Toronto & Montreal Who Are Killing It Right Now

Did you know that in the last five years, Canada has seen more women entrepreneurs than we’ve seen snow in the winter? Kidding BUT our economy is growing, and it’s thanks to mother nature, literally. The life of an entrepreneur is not easy, there are many ups and downs and according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, only 20% of businesses will survive after 5 years.
Owning a business is hard enough, but doing it all on your own from the ground up is a huge achievement. Which is why we’ve outlined some of this year's self-made Canadian women who are killing the game and just getting started.

Jennifer Abel / MONTREAL
Profession: Olympic Diver
Abel is a 3-time Olympic diver and 8 times world medallist. She won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the 3 m synch diving event. She became one of Canada’s youngest divers when she started in the 2008 Olympics

Melissa Andre / TORONTO
Profession: Owner and Creative Director of Melissa Andre Events
Melissa's event planning firm is based in both Los Angeles and Toronto. She has built a remarkable line-up of international clients which includes Drake, Dj Khaled, GQ, Instagram, Guerlain just to name a few.

Eugenie Bouchard /MONTREAL
Profession: Professional Tennis Player
Eugenie is a professional tennis player who became the first Canadian-born player representing Canada at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships (GO CANADA!). Bouchard reached a career-high ranking of No.5 in singles.

Emily Bloom / TORONTO
Profession: Founder of Bronzed by Bloom
Emily is the Founder of Bronzed by Bloom, a mobile spray tan service based in Toronto. Bloom’s spray tan product line is all natural and certified vegan. It’s been featured in Elle Canada and voted Top Tanning Salon in Canada for Toronto by Flare Magazine.

Justine Dufour-Lapointe / MONTREAL
Profession: Olympic Freestyle Skiier
Another athlete makes it on our list! Canadian freestyle skier. Dufour won a silver medal in moguls at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Her and sister Chloe-Dufour were the first Canadian sisters to win silver and gold medals together. She remains the youngest freestyle skiing champion to have won the Olympics at nineteen years old.

Profession: Soft Skills Trainer & Founder of SkillsCamp
Parnell owns a soft skills training company called SkillsCamp. SkillsCamp works with businesses and higher education institutions to build soft skill competencies (like conflict resolution or public speaking) in their staff and students.

Profession: TV Host & Writer
The host of Exhibitionists on CBC Television and Marvin’s Room on CBC Radio 2. Parris also writes a weekly column for CBC Arts. If that’s not impressive, she also writes plays and ideas for scripted television shows.
