Ice Smashed Through A GO Bus Windshield On Tuesday & The Damage Is So Scary (PHOTOS)

This is another dramatic example of why it's so important to clean snow and ice off your car before driving in winter. Toronto has seen plenty of incidents of damage caused by the impact this winter, and the most recent example might be one of the scariest. A GO bus' windshield smashed after a thick chunk of ice hit the vehicle while it was on the highway. The driver managed to avoid serious injury and steer the bus to safety. 

According to a Metrolinx blog release, the incident occurred around 9:25 a.m. on Ontario's Highway 401 near Meadowvale Road in the northeast area of Toronto.

The double-decker GO bus was suddenly hit by a large piece of ice that had apparently flown off a commercial vehicle.

The impact dramatically cracked the windshield and photos of the damage show the entire pane of glass caved in towards the driver's seat. 

Luckily, it was tempered glass, which managed to save the driver from being injured.

“We are incredibly grateful that no one was seriously injured,” said Metrolinx vice president of Bus Services, Eve Wiggins, per the post. “The fact that our driver was able to keep control of the bus on the 401 is a sign of his skill."

With damage like that, it seems extremely lucky that nobody was seriously hurt.

At this time of year, especially after a major snowstorm that rocked the majority of southern Ontario, the OPP sees an alarming number of incidents such as these.

This smash came just one day after OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt had tweeted a photo of a car's ruined windshield to urge drivers to take precautions.

“These sheets of ice can cause devastating injuries. We’ve seen cases where it goes right through the windshield,” said Schmidt.

“Good on to that driver to pull that vehicle over safely. It’s good to see that no one was seriously injured.”

One GTA driver recently even captured on dashcam video the moment that a chunk of ice smashing into his windshield, and it is terrifying.

After the GTA was slammed hard by a wild snowstorm on January 18-19, Toronto is expected to be hit with another five centimetres this weekend to add to Mother Nature's, erm, thoughtful gift.

At the moment, both the OPP and Metrolinx Transit Safety Officers are investigating this incident.

Sgt. Schmidt issued one final reminder that this all could have been avoided if people just take a few minutes before they start their day to ensure there's no potential for dislodged ice.

“It is dangerous and can be deadly,” he said. “Just think about who you would want to be sharing the road with.”
