Have you ever thought ‘you know I think I could do a better job running this city than the people in charge now?’
Well, then you may want to consider running for Mayor, which you only have a short time to sign up for now.
But it’s actually remarkably easy to get your name on the ballot for the highest office in city government.
Firstly you need to be a Canadian citizen, at least 18-years-old and own or rent some land in the city or be married to someone who does.
After that, you just need 25 people’s signatures, and to pay a $200 registration fee.
That’s it, it’s actually very easy to put your name on the ballot.
Now, why would anyone do this if they’re sure they’re going to lose?
Nominations close tomorrow! Individuals filing nominations must bring all required documents & identification with them, & ensure the completeness of their forms. After 2 p.m., on July 27, no additional nominations or withdrawals will be accepted. https://t.co/rBuigMG41q pic.twitter.com/h0VNxuYtEt
Some people run for mayor as a publicity stunt to increase the awareness of their business, the fee is way less than paying for an actual professional advertising campaign and just getting your name on the ballot makes it instantly recognizable.
For example, back in 2014 a dominatrix calling herself Mizz Barbie B**** ran on the pledge to ‘whip the city into shape.’
She didn’t win of course, but she got a lot more clients out of it. Currently, there are 20 people registered to run for Mayor, including current mayor John Tory, who is favoured to win re-election.
But who knows, before November 8 of 2016 most people thought there was no way Donald Trump could become president of America, maybe you can pull off a massive upset as well.
The deadline to register is 2 p.m. on Friday.
