Like most of the nation's sports stars right now, Canada's tennis queen must be itching to get back into action. But what is Bianca Andreescu doing in self-isolation to pass the time? Well, it turns out the teenager is swapping the tennis racquet for a guitar right now, and she's teased she might even share her work with her fans.
Andreescu has not played competitive tennis since late October at the Shenzen Open in China due to a troublesome knee injury.
The 19-year-old from Mississauga admitted recently she's felt pretty depressed at times as she's had to cancel attempted comebacks at January's Australian Open and March's BNP Paribas Open.
That was even before the COVID-19 pandemic brought sports to a grinding halt. Andreescu told Global News on Monday, March 23 that she's in self-isolation right now and has ditched her sporty side for the time being.
"I used to play the guitar and I still have my guitar but I haven't picked it up in over three years," says Andreescu, who talks from around the 51-minute mark of the video.
"But now, since I have all this time on my hands I've started playing it again. A bit rusty, but who knows, stay tuned for a video!"
Personally, we hope she follows through on that video promise.
For a start, we'd like to know how she matches up against Toronto's current guitar hero, Nick Nurse.
Who knows? If she's good enough, maybe she'll even find herself on stage with a rock band like Arkells, too?
That might be a step too far, but maybe it wouldn't be too surprising to see her join the likes of Toronto Maple Leafs' Tyson Barrie in joining the Hamilton, Ont. band on their live stream music lessons?
Meanwhile, although Andreescu is unable to practice her skills as she normally does with Ontario pretty much locked down right now, she's still managing to stay in shape in private.
"Right now, I'm self-quarantining myself, I can't practice like I usually do," she added. "I'm doing fitness at home though, I have a mini gym in my room which is very convenient so I can stay as fit as I can during this time," Andreescu told Global via video chat.
Keeping up with a workout routine is essential for athletes like Andreescu, even when there's no sport to be played right now, so it's no surprise she's putting in work.
Besides strumming away on her guitar and staying fit, as well as giving away a signing racquet to a lucky fan, Andreescu also managed to catch one of her matches being replayed on TSN just last week.
The sports channel shared the moment on their Instagram, via Andreescu's Instagram stories, as the teenager rewatched one of her wins on the way to her U.S. Open glory last year.
That's pretty cute, but we're holding out for the guitar video, to be honest.
