It Looks Like Bianca’s Getting A Street Named After Her And Probably A Victory Parade Too

It’s been a wild week for Canada’s tennis champion and her biggest celebration could be yet to come. John Tory says he wants to throw Bianca Andreescu a victory parade similar to the one held just after the Raptors won the championships. Toronto’s mayor made it clear Wednesday that he hopes to honour the athlete for her historic achievement, and he isn’t the only one.

"If she wants a parade in Toronto, there will be a parade in Toronto," Tory told The Toronto Star. However, he'll have to let Mississauga's mayor, Bonnie Crombie, have a say first. Andreescu will already be given the keys to her home city of Mississauga by Crombie, so it's possible that Crombie may want first dibs on the parade's location.

Tory added that although he is eager to celebrate the tennis superstar, he doesn’t want to overstep. “I’ve had lots of people ask me: When are we having a parade? I assure you we could get one organized," said Tory.

"On the one hand, I want Toronto to celebrate what she’s done. On the other hand, I don’t want it to look like we’re just jumping on the Bianca bandwagon. Let’s just leave that up to her.”

When asked if she wanted a parade during her first press conference back in Canada, Bianca responded “Yeah! Why not? That would be really cool!” She added that she doesn't know how busy her schedule will be, but clearly seems enthusiastic about the idea. “I have no idea, but if it happens, it would be really cool.”

It’s unlikely that Andreescu’s parade would require as much in-depth planning as the Raptors, which saw millions of people flood the streets of the city back in June. However, she has an entire country of fans, and her parade would likely get a massive turnout as well.

Crombie then took to Twitter on Thursday to share a design for a potential street sign named after Andreescu:

It's not clear at the moment whether the sign is part of the mayor's actual proposal or just a playful gesture, but it's another sign that things may be gathering pace.
