As Torontonians are aware, the TTC is an ever-changing project, with ongoing construction, service upgrades and new forms of payments. 2019 is going to be no different, and a lot of new changes and construction is going to be happening throughout the year that you should definitely be aware of.
Here are some of the top changes that will be happening around Toronto’s TTC lines that you should know about, so there are no early morning surprises on your already stressful commute.
Presto has already become a staple for some commuters, while others have not felt the need to switch over due to the variety of other payment options that are currently available at the moment, such as a Metropasses and tokens.
However, this is going to change. As of December 31, 2018, Metropasses will be discontinued and you will now have to load your monthly passes onto your Presto card. The TTC is attempting to make this switch easier by placing a variety of Presto card booths throughout all TTC stations where you will be able to purchase and load your new $6 Presto card.
It is also projected that in the summer of 2019, you will no longer be able to purchase tickets or tokens as well. TTC users will mainly have to rely on Presto cards to get around all TTC lines.
New streetcars have already been rolled out onto the 501 Spadina route and many of you are already aware of how much bigger they are compared to the older streetcars that are still plaguing the streets of downtown Toronto.
As of 2019, there are a variety of streetcar updates that are projected to take place that will swap out some of the old streetcar routes for the newer version.
You can expect to see a variety of streetcar lines with these new streetcars throughout the new year, including:
- 501 Queen
- 504 King
- 502 Downtowner
- 502 Kingston Rd
- 506 Carlton
TTC is also working towards improving many of their stations. A variety of these changes include renovations, adding second exits for better traffic flow and making them more wheelchair accessible.
Throughout 2019 you can be expected to experience construction throughout a variety of TTC stations as these improvements are underway, including, but not limited to:
- Bay Station (Adding elevators, improved signage and sliding doors)
- Dupont Station (Adding elevators and additional security cameras)
- King Station (Accessibility from the PATH, sliding doors, public art instillations)
- Wellesley Station (Second Exit)
- Sherbourne (Art Instillations, two new elevators, sliding doors)
Eglinton Crosstown is a new TTC line which is expected to be completed in 2021, it will have 25 stations running east-west across Toronto.
During 2019 you can expect a variety of construction within the area. Many bus routes that are already present on this Eglinton line will become affected, including the 54 Lawrence East and the 34 Eglinton.
Forest Hill Station, originally Bathurst, will become an underground station included in this construction that will be located at Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West. There will be two main entrances and a TTC bus platform at the station.
During this construction period, commuters should be aware that this station will be closed for a majority of the new year while construction is underway.
Service Upgrades & Route Diversions
Of course, there will also be a variety of construction and service upgrades that are to occur within 2019. In order to ensure that you are aware of these closures, make sure to visit the TTC website.
However, there are a variety of route diversions that are already scheduled to take place into the New Year, included buses such as:
- 44 Kipling South
- 45 Kipling
- 70 O’Connor
- 944 Kipling South Express
- 503 Kingston Road
