Canada Ranked The 8th Safest Country To Live In For 2017

Way to go, Canada - A recent ranking by the Institute for Economics and Peace has placed Canada in 8th place for safety, among 163 countries around the world.

In a world that is currently ridden with pressing issues such as global warming, poverty and terrorism, the top ranking is a somewhat comforting statistic for Canadians to hold on to. The study referred to a Global Peace Index, which used 23 factors to rank countries on their level of safety and peace. Some of the factors include homicides, crime rates, level of terrorism and internal deaths. 

While Canada held onto its score from previous years, the United States' score decreased significantly and as a result brought down the average ranking for North America. A combination of increased homicide rates and internal conflicts contributed to the country's poor score.

Despite the recent increase in terrorist activity in Europe, it still remains to be the most peaceful continent in the world, with eight of the top ten most safe countries being European.

  7. Slovenia
  8. Canada
  9. Switzerland
  10. Ireland

  16. Germany
  17. Finland
  18. Sweden
  19. Belgium
  20. Netherlands
