According to Google's projections, he successfully surpassed the 270-vote threshold to become the President-elect.
Historically, the winner of the national popular vote is almost always also the winner in the Electoral College, the individuals who actually elect the next president. Such is not the case in this election, as Trump still won it without winning the popular vote.
On December 19, 2016, the 538-member electoral college will meet to formally elect the new president and vice president. The results will be counted and officially revealed by Vice President Joe Biden on January 16, 2017.
