Heavy thunderstorms and rainfall are expected for today, followed by extreme heat this weekend.

This week is giving us a taste of every kind of extreme summer weather in Ontario. This weekend, temperatures are expected to climb up to 45 °C with the humidex. Today, a special weather statement has been issued for extreme thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

According to the statement, the heaviest storms are expected this morning through midday, with up to 55 mm of total local rainfall. The special weather warning will remain in effect for the rest of the week as we move into "an extreme heat event" for the Canada Day long weekend.

Overnight temperatures will only fall to the mid-twenties (stifling humidity included) during the upcoming heat wave, "providing little or no relief from the heat," the statement says.

The statement warns Ontarians to be prepared for the extremely hot and humid conditions to persist well into first week of July. "Current indications suggest the heat could persist into the middle of next week," reads the statement.

The statement is in effect for parts of southern Ontario, and is the "most significant heat event of the season thus far" this season across the province.

According to Ready.gov, "extreme heat often results in the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards" in the U.S. and Canada. According to the site, there are tons of ways that you should be planning ahead for extreme heat, as well as heavy thunderstorms and lightning
