Flights From Toronto To New York City's LaGuardia Airport Are Now Getting Cancelled And Delayed

At around 10:30 AM ET on Friday morning, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that flights into New York City's LaGuardia Airport are now being halted. The reason is described as a shortage of flight traffic controllers at the airport. LaGuardia Airport is one of the busiest in America.

As a result, flights scheduled to depart out of Toronto's Pearson Airport are now being cancelled and delayed. Multiple airlines including Air Canada, WestJet, Delta and American are being impacted by delays. Florida's International Airport is also facing the same staff shortage, and flights are being delayed and cancelled there as well.

"We have experienced a slight increase in sick leave at two air traffic control facilities affecting New York and Florida," the FAA said in their statement today, "We've mitigated the impact by augmenting staffing, rerouting traffic, and increasing spacing between aircraft as needed."

Flights that have already departed for New York City and Florida will land, but flights that have yet to take off are being cancelled and delayed en masse. According to CBC, the FAA is also delaying flights into Newark and Philadelphia.
