VanVleet Had The Best Comeback For A Reporter Who Called Him Out For His Height

Anyone looking to play in the NBA is going to have to get good at overcoming obstacles. Fred VanVleet is one of those players. The Raptor went from being undraftable to unbeatable in three years and judging by his attitude, he’s just getting started. VanVleet has also mastered another element of his job as a professional athlete - answering reporters' prying questions during press conferences.

During a media conference in Japan, following Toronto’s victory over the Rockets, VanVleet was asked by a journalist if he had to train differently from his teammates because of his shorter height. The question immediately caused Pascal Siakam, who was sat beside VanVleet, to burst into uncontrollable laughter. However, while Siakam struggled to contain himself, VanVleet had the perfect response.

“I mean there is a million different things you can do, obviously at the NBA level you gotta be able to shoot three’s, so work on your shooting,” VanVleet responded.

“Just be fearless. It doesn’t matter. If you’re good enough, you’ll find a way. You’ll have an opportunity; height doesn’t always mean everything,” he added.

VanVleet concluded by joking about wanting to see what his height was at now after recently receiving new measurements ahead of the upcoming season. “I’m six and a half without shoes, so I might be 6’2 with the right pair of shoes on.”

The Raptors beat the Houston Rockets 134-129 during a pre-season game in Japan on Tuesday morning.* The win sparked hope that the defending champions could win it all again this season.

Rookie Terence Davis, in particular, got fans' attention for his impressive performance during the game.
