GO Transit riders suffered through the evening commute from hell yesterday, after lightning strikes caused a major service shutdown on the Lakeshore West line and severe delays on the East line. Commuters were left stranded near Union Station for over two hours, from when the delays began at around 5:30 PM to just after 8:00 PM.
Frustrated commuters had little choice but to sit tight and wait it out. Shuttle buses weren't running due to the sheer magnitude of the shutdown, which impacted around 10,000 people.
Hundreds of riders took to Twitter to voice their distress. Many could barely endure the crowded, stuffy, and unbearably hot conditions inside the trains, especially at the end of a long day. Which also happened to be one of the hottest days of the season, at 40°C with the humidex - making the delays not only extremely inconvenient, but also dangerous.
"Pregnant and short of breathe on this Not-moving-for-one-hour hot crowed NO GO train," one woman tweeted just before 6:00 PM. "Someone had a panic attack on my sisters train yesterday," says another tweet, "Pathetic customer service."
After an hour and a half of waiting, things got even more dire. "Almost 90 minutes- no water standing room only and 95 degrees. And no communication at all. Someone just hit the emergency alarm. I think someone passed out on coach 2055" one commuter tweeted. GO Train customer service didn't respond.

Ridiculous. 3.5 hours, one train sitting on the tracks, two subway lines and a 90 minute roundtrip from my husband and I'm finally home. Very poor communication, if we'd known it was so bad could have take Milton line to at least head in the right direction!!
Ridiculous. Reading reports of 30 minutes delay....nice try! The 4:30 express that became 4:40 all stop got into clarkson just before 7:00. That is an almost 2 hour delay. Mad panic to figure up daycare pick-up and BIG fines for being late. Communication lies.
