GTA Hospitals With COVID-19 Outbreaks Have Been Reported & Patients Are Getting Sick

As the pandemic continues across the province, it seems that some hospitals are being hit hard. Over the past few weeks, many local medical centers have declared a COVID-19 outbreak. North York General and Sick Kids Hospital are some of the most recent examples of GTA hospitals with COVID-19 outbreaks.

On Tuesday evening, North York General hospital made an announcement that they were dealing with an outbreak after three of their patients tested positive for the virus. "Our Reactivation Unit - 5 West, is currently on outbreak due to three patients testing positive for COVID-19," North York General wrote on their website. According to their website, they are currently treating 27 inpatients, as well as 4 ICU patients and 3 on ventilators. Sick Kids Hospital also announced an outbreak on Tuesday.

One patient, as well as their parents and a staff member at the hospital, tested positive for the virus, according to their news release.

Earlier this month, a Mississauga hospital also reported an outbreak, with a healthcare worker testing positive.

"Following a consultation with Peel Public Health and out of an abundance of caution, we are declaring an outbreak of staff cases," wrote the hospital's statement.

However, it's been more than just these three locations that have declared outbreaks this month.

St. Joseph's Hospital announced on Monday that the building has just been cleared of its outbreak status.

About two weeks ago, the hospital's intensive care unit reported a surge in COVID-19 cases, with a member of staff also falling ill to the virus.

According to the Toronto Star, dealing with COVID-19 in hospitals is posing a challenge. One in seven Ontarians who test positive for the virus are actually healthcare workers.

Last week, it was reported that 76 hospital staff tested positive for COVID-19 at two major Mississauga hospitals.

Despite these outbreaks, Ontario revealed last week that the province is currently in the "best-case" scenario when it comes to COVID-19 cases.

According to the report, community spread has appeared to have peaked and 20,000 cases are being predicted province-wide.
